Religious Education in the East Sussex Agreed Syllabus

The key features of this Agreed Syllabus are to:
•   develop a deep knowledge and understanding of key religious concepts;
•   become religiously literate adults;
•   be encouraged to learn about religion and explore the beliefs of others;
•   develop the ability to contribute positively to society and cultivate an understanding and respect for others and themselves;
•   value both the commonality and diversity present in the world through gaining an understanding and respect for the main world religions;
•   ask ultimate questions.

This syllabus has six key strands:
• beliefs, teachings and sources;
• practices and ways of life;
• forms of expression;
• identity and belonging;
• meaning, purpose and truth;
• values and commitments.

The aims of RE in Church Schools are:
•   to enable pupils to know about and understand Christianity as a living faith that influences the lives of people worldwide and as the religion that has most shaped British culture and heritage.
•   to enable pupils to know and understand about other world religions and world views, their impact on society, culture and wider world, enabling pupils to express ideas and insights.
•   to contribute to the development of pupils’ own spiritual/philosophical convictions, exploring and enriching their own beliefs and values.

Our expectation is that all pupils are religiously literate and as a minimum are able to:
•   give a theologically informed and thoughtful account of Christianity as a living and diverse faith.
•   show an informed and respectful attitude to religions and world views in their search for God and meaning.
•   engage in meaningful and informed dialogues with those of other faiths and none.
•   reflect critically and responsibly on their own spiritual, philosophical and ethical convictions.
